Every charm in the catalog is an opportunity to become a stronger and smarter scout.

—THE LADYBIRD HANDBOOK

Gathered under the pergola in my backyard for a formal meeting, I pass out everyone’s first two charms, rush-ordered for the occasion, the Identification charm— a miniature silver Handbook—and the First Banishment golden robin.

“Congratulations,” I tell the babybirds. “Thanks to some light hazing from the senior scouts and your teamwork with the Tizzy Lice, you have all earned your first charms!”

“I have waited my whole life for this,” Avi squeals, clutching her charms so hard that the tips of her fingers turn white. She plants a noisy kiss on the robin’s teensy beak.

“I’ve only been waiting a week, but I’m still hyped,” Sasha says.

“This explains why there are pliers next to the sugar bowl,” Kelsey says, reaching for the plate of tools. She squints through the Handbook’s little loop. “These suckers are hecka tiny!”

“You’ll get good at it,” I assure her. “By your fifth charm, you’ll be able to snap them on in a jiff. Which brings me to our first order of business today.” From out of the same bag, I fish out the charm catalogs. They’re floppy magazine paper with two models pretending to be scouts on the cover. I pass them around. “You need to fill your bracelets by the end of summer, and I need to fill in some of the charms I missed back in the day, so why don’t we all choose one or two charms and then vote on what we want to focus on for the next week or two?”

“You need charms, too?” Avi asks with a snicker. “But you have a whole bracelet!”

“Bracelets only count if they’re balanced,” I say, echoing Dame Debby. “You’re not supposed to get ten field charms, then quit, like I did.”

“Then it’s a good thing you’re back,” Kelsey says, and grins at me.

I peel open the cover of the charms catalog, trying to ignore the sinking in my stomach. “Yeah. Good thing.”
